Music Video of the Week

If you know me, you know I love music videos. A lot. My love for music combined with my mass communications interests have always propelled me to love well produced and creative music videos. This page will feature a new music video every week for you to check out and love or hate on.

Week of 10/19-10/25

Relient K – Pressing On

This week we have a blast from the past.  Relient K’s new album “Forget and Not Slow Down” came out earlier this month, and it’s fantastic.  To celebrate, I’m putting up a 2002 video for the band’s song “Pressing On.”  It’s classic Relient K – very funny.  Give it a watch and remember the ol’ days back when Matt Thiessen apparently had bleached blonde hair.  Very weird.

Week of 9/28-10/4

He is Legend- The Seduction

Last week, it was announced that one of my favorite bands, He is Legend, is taking an “indefinite hiatus” which, for all intensive purposes means that it’s over.  With that in mind, I’ve decided to make my favorite song of theirs this week’s video of the week.  If you don’t know He is Legend, then you probably won’t get this video.  That’s okay, just trust that this video encapsulates the band quite well.  If you like puppetry, then you might have just found your new favorite music video.  Give a look see.

Week of 9/14-9/20

Paramore – Ignorance

Yes, Yes y’all, Music Video of the Week is back.  Since Paramore’s new album “brand new eyes” comes out in a few weeks, I thought it appropriate to display their new music video for Ignorance.  I was a little let down upon the first couple of viewings, but felt better when I read the video treatment.  The idea is that no matter where Haley shines the light, it still is reflecting primarily off of her (this makes sense, since the song is about the struggles that they faced in the previous year, centering partly around the constant focus on Haley).  Give it a watch and stay tuned for next week.

Week of 6/1-6/7

Dead Poetic – New Medicines

Yeah . . . I bet no one reads this anymore . . . if they ever did.  Oh well, who cares!  I love the use of red in this video, it goes along with the album artwork well and fits extremely well into the video – I think the ink blot idea is genious.  Anyway, it’s a great song and a fun video so . . . watch it . . . if you want . . .

Week of 4-13-4/19

Emery – Walls

Okay, so it’s been three months.  So sue me.  I’ll make it up by giving you one of my all time favorite music videos this week.  There’s nothing flashy about this video, but it definitely gets the point across.  This is my favorite song by Emery, and when I saw the video for the first time, I was blown away.  Don’t expect any fancy graphics or cool explosions, that’s not what this video is about.  Check it out and let me know what you think!

Week of 1/18-1/24

Yellowcard – Way Away

If you’re going to use shots of the band playing in the video, make sure they look cool, there’s nice angles, and that the camera doesn’t focus on just one member.  Also, make sure the band looks like they care about the song they’re playing.  This is a fun video by Yellowcard with nice band shots and some fun little clips to add a story into the mix.  Love the song and especially love the colors in the video.  Check it.

Week of 1/11-1/17

Green Day – Boulevard of Broken Dreams

It’s a new year, time to get this thing back and rolling again!  You may have noticed that I haven’t picked many mainstream videos thus far, but this one is so mainstream it’s not even funny.  I don’t even really like Green Day.  However, the song has been stuck in my head lately, so here we go.  There’s no real storyline progression here, which bugs me a little, but the look and feel of the video is amazing.  The director used a razor, cigarette butts, and coffee spills on the actual film to create the look of this, and it comes off as authentic and pretty freakin’ cool.  Enjoy it . . . and until next week, I’m out.

Week of 12/7-12/13

Linkin Park – Numb

Perhaps I should change this page to “Music Video of the Month.”  I’m so sorry for the lag in posts, but I promise to get back at it, including some old and forgotten ones!  This week’s video is a personal favorite of mine because I connect so well with it.  Linkin Park put out a new video every week it seems, but they’re usually very solid.  You all know I love story telling and I love the room for interpretation that this video leaves.  See for yourself.  Peace!

Week of 11/9-11/15

Copeland – Should You Return

Wow, I fell off. I even missed the whole Halloween season, which is one of my favorites! I guess I’ve got to get back on track with this. This week’s video comes from Copeland’s new album “You Are My Sunshine.” For their Special Edition DVD, the band shot a concept music video for each song on the record. As I’m sure you can guess, I think this is amazing. This video was my favorite and just happens to be my favorite song on the record. After Teresa and I watched this video on the DVD, we both sat there for a minute and said “wow.” I hope you enjoy it!

Week of 9/28-10/4

P.O.D. – Alive

So I’ve been behind lately on the videos and apologize. This week is a video that came out my senior year of high school from one of my all-time favorite bands. This video captures the song perfectly and tells a really cool story. Not to mention the scene where car parts are flying past Sonny’s face in slow motion . . . sick.

Week of 9/7-9/13

Underoath – Desperate Times, Desperate Measures

If you didn’t go buy the new Underoath album last week . . . you’re crazy. Go buy it this week, I’ll forgive you. They went in a different direction with this album music video wise, leaving Popcore behind and going with Walter Robot. I gotta admit, the video is kind of weird, but also pretty cool. Check it out and let me know what you think!

Week of 8/31-9/6
Underoath – Writing on the Walls

This is a special week, as on Tuesday, Underoath will release their new album “Lost in the Sound of Separation.” If you don’t already know, Underoath is by FAR my favorite band and I’m super excited about the new album. This video is the first single of their last album and was done by Popcore Films in Sweden. I love Popcore and they are easily my favorite music video group. Combine that with my favorite band, and you get this – a Grammy nominated music video that is freaking awesome.

Week of 8/24-8/30
The Devil Wears Prada – Hey John, What’s Your Name Again?

Please pardon the poor quality of youtube on this one. This video was done by Endeavor Media, which I feel do a great job of capturing a beautiful picture in their videos as well as telling stories that take a little more attention than the average music video. Also, this song is just amazing, and I can’t wait to see these guys in October with Saosin and Underoath!

Week of 8/17-8/23
Anberlin – Paperthin Hymn

This week’s video is directed by Christopher Sims. One of the things I love about a good video is if it tells a good story. There needs to be a good balance of band shots along with the story being told, and I feel like this video captures that balance perfectly. I also love the twist at the end, a reward for following the video and the story it tells until the end. Hope you enjoy it!

Week of 8/10-8/16
My Chemical Romance – Helena

Over the next weeks, I’ll be showing you videos by some of my favorite producers/producing companies. This one was done by Marc Webb, and while it may or may not be my favorite of his, it’s my favorite song by one of my favorite bands. What’s better than a choreographed funeral with a dancing corpse? I know I can’t think of anything. This video is pretty fun, and it’s SO perfect for this song. Hope you enjoy it!

Week of 8/3-8/9
Gym Class Heroes – New Friend Request

If you’ve ever used myspace, you’ll probably find this video pretty humorous. I love the concept. There’s nothing flashy, but there doesn’t need to be since the story is strong and progresses visually without overemphasizing the point. Also, it’s a great song!
